EFFECT OF SCHOOL DROPOUT AND GENDER INEQUALITY ON GIRL CHILD EDUCATION IN SOKOTO METROPOLIS (A CASE STUDY OF SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN SOKOTO SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT)

Abstract

This study was an attempt to examine the effect of school dropout and gender inequality on girl-child education in Sokoto Metropolis with reference to some selected secondary school in Sokoto South Local Government area. six (6) secondary schools were selected for the study. They are; Hafsatu Ahmadu Bello Arabic Girls College Sokoto, Government Girls Day Secondary School M/Magaji, Nana Girls Secondary School Sokoto, Government Girls Day Secondary School T/Wada, Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Institute and government Girls Secondary School F/L Arkilla. One hundred and twenty (120) structured questionnaires were administered to both teachers and students in sampled schools. The statistical tool used to determine correlation between the variables includes calculated means and standard deviation and Pearson product Moment Correlation in which t-test used to test null hypotheses. Generally, the study adopted descriptive survey research method. A number of factors are responsible for girl-child school dropout and gender inequality, such factors includes: gender discrimination, early child marriage, customs/ societal belief, negative attitude towards Western education and religious belief. The study recommends among the other Government should launch some special programme intended to mobilize people on important of girl-child education because it is the crucial part of the educational adjustments.
