| dc.description.abstract | Patient cooperation plays a crucial role in clinical training within teaching hospitals, particularly in sensitive procedures such as obstetric ultrasound examinations. This study assessed patients’ attitudes toward the involvement of students in obstetric ultrasound at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto. A prospective cross-sectional study design was adopted. The study population comprised pregnant women attending obstetric ultrasound examinations in the Radiology Department of UDUTH. Using Taro Yamane’s formula, a sample size of 271 respondents was obtained through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire translated into Hausa for better comprehension. The questionnaire assessed patients’ comfort levels and perceptions regarding student involvement using a five-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. The results showed that although most respondents acknowledged the importance of student involvement for learning, many were uncomfortable with students being actively involved during their examinations. Greater comfort was reported when students were supervised by qualified radiographers or radiologists, when prior information was provided, and when students were of the same gender as the patients. Cultural and religious beliefs significantly influenced patients’ comfort levels. Overall perception toward student involvement was positive, particularly when supervision, informed consent, and respect for privacy were ensured. In conclusion, patients demonstrated a generally positive attitude toward student involvement in obstetric ultrasound when appropriate ethical and professional measures were observed. The study recommends adequate patient education, prior informed consent, strict supervision, and sensitivity | |
