EFFECT OF INSECURITY ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN WAMAKKO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, SOKOTO STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

The study examine the effect of insecurity on academic performance of primary school pupils in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto state, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised in the study and they include 1.How does insecurity affect the attendance of primary school pupils in Wamakko Local Government? 2. How does insecurity affect the enrollment of pupils in Wamakko Local Government? 3. How does insecurity affect the pupils’ participation and academic performance in primary school education in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto? The population of the study consists of 8,506 pupils and 1,225 teachers in 93 public primary schools in Wamakko LGA (SUBEB, 2023). The sample size for the study consist of 225 pupils and 16 teachers in 8 public school in Wamakko LGA. A self-design questionnaire tagged effect of insecurity on academic performance of primary school pupils in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto. (CIPSPQ) was use to gather required information from the respondents the instrument has four sections containing items that revealed demographic information, insecurity affect the attendance of primary school pupils, insecurity affect the enrollment of pupils and insecurity affect the pupils participation and academic performance in primary schools in Wamakko LGA. The result revealed that the major effect of insecurity in academic performance of primary school pupils primary school pupils are pupils fear of attack which rank 1st, displacement of pupil's parent because of insecurity which rank 2nd. Other effects are on schools factors and societal factors there are null hypotheses were formulated for the study. The variable considered are gender, age, educational qualification and length of service. Based on the results of the findings of this study, various recommendations were made which include: Government, community and educational stakeholder should try as much as possible to provide adequate security to primary schools in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto state.
