Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research titled “Analysis of causes of errors in written French by French students:
case study of Shehu Shagari College of Education and Usmanu Danfodiyo University
Sokoto” is an error analysis of learners of French with reference to lexical, morphological
and syntactic errors. The researcher used structuralism method and at the same time applied
lexical, linguistic and comparative approaches in her analysis. In the course of this research,
the researcher found out that quite a good number of errors are committed due to the
interference of maternal languages. She also found out that many other errors are committed
due to lack of proper knowledge of the French language. That is why the examined errors
committed by the students intervene in the lexical field through lack of required
xii
vocabulary,in the grammatical field and also by the interference of the already acquired
knowledge of other languages and which is more or less proficient in comparison to the
French language, which in many cases comes as the third, fourth or fifth language. However,
this study has been able to corroborate the assertion that error is no longer to be considered
as an obstacle in learning, but error is to be considered as a teaching aid for the teacher,
whose objective is to see to the success of his students.
