EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON CEREAL CROPS FARMING IN KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA

dc.description.abstractABSTRACT The study analysed the effects of climate change on cereal crops farming in Kebbi State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling was used to select the study area, while random sampling was used to select 180 cereal crops farmers as the sample size of the study. Structured questionnaire was used for data collection, while descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis .The study reveals that the majority of cereal crops farmers were males (91.1%), married (80.0%), aged between 20-35 years (46.6%), family size (56.1%) between 1-5 member with farming experience (62.8%) between 1-10 years. The study also reveals that the majority of cereal crops farmers (66.7%)expressed that the application of burning materials was the farming practices contributing to climate change. Thus, rice was the cereal crop (45.9%) most affected by climate change. Poor crops yield (50.0%) was the adverse effects of climate change on cereal crop farming. Using crop resistance varieties (54.4%) was the adaptation measures of cereal crops farmers. Inadequate financial resource (60.0) was the constraint of cereal crops farmers adaptation measures. The null hypothesis was accepted (F-calculated value =2.09 < F-tabulated =3.48) at 5%level of significance. The study recommended that the cereal crop farmers should be provided with varieties that can tolerate the effects of climate changes.
