Abstract
This study also sought to assess the Guidance and Counselling Programme in Sokoto Metropolis. The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which Guidance and Counselling services prepare learners in adult education centers to achieve social, personal and academic development and make informed career decisions compatible with their individual needs and abilities. A descriptive survey was chosen for this study. Survey questionnaires with closed and open-ended questions and semi-interview guides were used to solicit views, perceptions and opinions on the benefits of Guidance and Counselling Programmes. A population of 10 students and 10 teachers was divided into categories through stratified random sampling. Lack of qualified teachers, stationary, books and relevant facilities like counselling rooms were found to be major barriers inhibiting the implementation of Guidance and Counselling services. This study examines functions of guidance and counsellors at adult education centres in Nigeria. Equally, the paper reviews different definition of adult education, objectives o f guidance and counselling units in adult education centers, scope of guidance and counselling center and problems affecting guidance and counselling center which prompted for the specific functions of counsellors at adult education center. In addition, the paper offers some recommendations among which include organizing orientation for new students, establishment of functional and fully equipped counseling centers, organizing career day activities arrangement for referral of the clients ’ among others.
