Abstract

ABSTRACT The researchaimed to study the effects of supernatant of fermented maize (Omidun) as a probiotic on productivity of broiler chicken. Four samplesofOmidun were screened for isolation of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB)andone-hundred-and-fifty-day-old broiler chicks which were divided into five groups (A,B,C,D and E) which were given ordinary water (control), commercially prepared (Beta probiotics(R)), standardized Omidun at 10mls, 5mls and 2.5mls respectively on daily basis for six weeks. No statisticallysignificant difference (p>0.05) was observed ingrowth parameterseither weekly or cumulatively.Although, group that was given 10mls/lof standardizedOmidunhad best performance biologically. Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were observedonPacked Cell Volume (PCV),heamoglobin (Hb) and Red Blood Cells (RBC) and monocyte counts.Lowest mortality rate (6.78%) was recorded in the Group C, followed by 10.23%, 17.55%,17.63% and 25.51% for the treatment groups B, D,E and A respectively.Probiotic lactic acid bacteria from Omidunwas cost effective as compared to the commercially prepared. Omidun has shownpromising tendencies to improve broiler productivity. Irecommended further research to standardized the dosage of Omidun and prepare it for commercial purpose.
