Abstract

ABSTRACT Bacteria can be resistant to multiple antibiotics and most antiboiotics will not work on some bacterial infections, hence new antimicrobial compounds are urgently needed. Plants are considered the greatest source to obtain new antimicrobials. Several solvent extracts of aloe vera gel were tested for it's antimicrobial activity. From the results, ethanol extracts of aloe vera gel inhibited the growth of E. coli, S. aureus and B. substiliswith MIC of 6.25 mg/ml, 12.5 mg/ml, and 6.25 mg/ml; A MBC of 12mg/ml for the three microbe and diameters zones of inhibition for E .coli being 17 mm, S. aureus being 19mm and B. substilis being 13mm respectively. The Aqueous extract inhibited the growth of E. coli, S. aureus and B. substilis at MIC of 6.25 mg/ml, 12.5mg/ml and 12mg/ml mg/ml; MBC for E.coli, S. aureus and B. substilis being 12.5mg/ml, 25mg/ml and 12.5mg/ml and zone of inhibition for E.coli, S. aureus and B. substilis being 20 mm, 16mm and 21 mm respectively. Methanol inhibited the growth of E. coli, S. aureus and B. substilis at MIC of 12.5mg/ml, 6.25mg/ml and 25mg/ml; A MBC of E. coli, S. aureus and B. substilis being 25mg/ml, 12.5mg/ml and 25mg/mland zone of inhibition for E. coli, S. aureus and B. substilis being 17 mm, 19 mm and 13 mm respectively. The result on the analysis of phytochemical analysis of ethanol extract Aloe vera gel gave positive result with regards to alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, saponin and glycoside. Aqueous extract gave negative result in regards to glycoside while Methanol extract gave negative result with regards to saponin and glycoside. It was observed that all solvent extracts used in this study had antimicrobial activity. Hence it is envisaged that further isolation of this active compounds from the Aloe vera gel can serve as leads for drug discovery and design of novel antimicrobial.
