Abstract

Description

Background of Study: Radiation therapy plays a vital role in cancer management; however, radiation therapists in Nigeria face numerous challenges that affect the quality of care delivery. Understanding these challenges and identifying possible solutions are essential for improving radiotherapy practice and patient outcomes. Objectives: To explore the major challenges faced by radiation therapists and identify possible strategies to overcome them at the Radiotherapy Unit of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto, Nigeria. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological study design was adopted. Data were collected through interviews with radiation therapists at the Radiotherapy Unit of UDUTH, Sokoto. Six radiation therapists participated in the study. The collected data were analysed using thematic analysis to identify key issues and proposed solutions. Results: Findings revealed that the major challenges include frequent equipment breakdown, management of paediatric and critically ill patients, psychosocial stress, inadequate welfare and remuneration, and weak radiation safety monitoring. Despite these constraints, the therapists demonstrated strong professional dedication. Suggested solutions include regular equipment maintenance, specialized training, improved staff welfare, psychological support, and policy reforms to strengthen radiotherapy practice. Conclusion: Addressing these challenges through increased funding, policy support, and continuous professional development will significantly improve the quality and efficiency of radiotherapy services at UDUTH and other institutions across Nigeria.
