| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT The bacterium Lactobacillus which have the ability of utilizing saccharin as their sole source of carbon and for its growth, the isolated bacterium from kwalkwalawa river was enriched and the isolated specie was found to be Lactobacillus, the result which was obtained from the research indicated that saccharin is subjected to dissimilation by the Lactobacillus species the result also shown that the concentration of the saccharin is decreasing with respect to time and the concentration was decreasing from day 1 to day 6. Therefore as the bacterium continue to utilizes the saccharin it concentration is decreasing and the result in figure (4.2 to 4.6) was the result of different concentration of saccharin ranging from 0.025g, 0.5g , 1.0g, 1.5g, 2.0g, of saccharin that undergone degradation by Lactobacillus specie, likewise in aconical flask containing mineral salt medium and saccharing without the bacterium serves as the control (fig.4.7) in which the concentration remain unchanged ,and for the for the conical flask containing mineral salt medium and the bacterium (fig.4.8) the absorbance was slightly increasing ,and this might be as a result of the bacterium that was slant in the conical flask is not growing therefore it may cause an increased in the absorbance. There are several types of bacterium that utilizes saccharin as their sole source of carbon and energy which can also utilizes sulfur from the saccharin that was isolated. | |
