dc.description.abstract8 ABSTRACTS This study determined the relationship between language teachers’ effectiveness and junior secondary schools students’ academic performance in English language. The study was a survey of the correlation type and the population consisted of teachers and students in public junior secondary schools in Sokoto metropolis. The sample size was made up of 400 participants, comprising of 80 English language teachers and 320 JSS students, drawn from eight (8) schools using simple random sampling technique. Two instruments developed by the researchers were used to collect data for the study. These include, Students Performance Tests in English Language (SPT) used to test the students’ academic performance and a Rating Scale which was used to test the Teachers’ Effectiveness. Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.98 and 0.79 respectively were obtained from the two instruments used for the study. The study has four specific objectives and four corresponding research questions. The results showed that English teachers effectiveness has relatively weak relationship with students’ performance in English language at the junior secondary school level in Sokoto metropolis. However, the observed weaknesses in the relationship were statistically significant. This could be due to influence of school environmental factors which were not included in this study. It was concluded that teachers’ effectiveness is not the only determinant of students’ academic performance in English language at the junior secondary education level.
