IMPACT OF ALMAJIRI SYSTEM OF EDUCATION ON THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN SOKOTO SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, SOKOTO STATE NIGERIA

Abstract

The essence of this research is to find out the impact of almajiri system of education on the community development in Sokoto South local government area, Sokoto State. The research was guided by three questions as : What are the effects of Almajiri system of education on the community development in Sokoto south local government area? What are the effects of Almajiri system of education on social development of Almajiri children? What are the impact of Almajiri system of education on the economic development of Mallams in Sokoto south? The research design employed in the study is a descriptive survey, the research questions and objectives were tallied. The data was collected from students (Almajiri) through the use of quesionnaire, 100 were administered to the students (Almajiri). The population of the study were 1365 for students( Almajiri) and 28 for Mallams, which make 1393 for both Malans and Almajiri, the sample size were 100. The data was presented and analyzed clearly using frequency count and simple parcentage for clear uderstanding. The study found that majority of the Almajiri does not have formal education, also study found that most of the Almajiri sleeping in congested rooms, some on floor and mats, also the study found that most of the Almajiri are not visited by their parents. The research recommended that government should make Qur'anic schools, Tsangaya and design curriculim to adopt formal system of education, government should provide Tsangaya with shelter, toilets, bathrooms, mats, borehols, medical care centre and food.
