Abstract
ABSTRACT
Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCA) is caused by mutant haemoglobin (HbS), arising from the replacement of a hydrophilic amino acid residue-glutamic acid by a hydrophobic moiety valine, at the sixth position of the β-chain of haemoglobin molecule. High levels of HbF and improved antioxidants lead to a decrease severity of the disease, hence the reason for this study to evaluate the effectiveness of two Nutriceutical juices (NUJGA-100 and NUJHA-100) formulated from Carrot, Cabbage, Honey, Gum Arabic in management of Sickle Cell Anaemia. Forty-five (45) patients were recruited for this study, and they were divided into Group I, Group II, Group III, Group IV, Group V. Automated Blood Cell Counter and standard analytical procedures were used in analysing haematological parameters, foetal haemoglobin levels, Haemoglobin polymerization rate, Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio and antioxidant status before treatment and after 12 weeks. HbF levels, RBC, Hb, PCV, MCV, MCH and antioxidant vitamins increased significantly (P<0.05) when Group I was compared with other Groups and at baseline. Polymerization rate and MDA levels decreased significantly (P<0.05). This study reveals that NUJGA-100 and NUJHA-100 can be used to induce foetal haemoglobin production. Also it reveals that both nutraceutical juices have potent antioxidant properties as such can be used to improve the clinical condition of SCA characterized by oxidative stress.
