EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF FEMALE STUDENTS IN USMANU DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY, SOKOTO

Abstract

This research examined the influence of Social Media on the Academic Performance of female students in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. The research employed a descriptive research design. Four research questions and four research objectives were raised in order to guide the research. The population of the research consists of 1,255 female students from five (5) Departments in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Sample size of 133 students were purposively sampled from the five department. The instrument for data collection is a self-designed questionnaire titled “Effects of Social Media on the Academic Performance of Female Students Questionnaire (ESMAPFSQ)” which was validated by experts in the Departent. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentages. Findings of the research showed that female students in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto are more exposed to Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Wikipedia and other sources which have improved their academic performance through academic discussion and as sources of information. It was recommended among others that students should be educated on the influence of Social media on their academic performance and should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use these sites.
