Abstract

his study compared the effectiveness and consumer perceptions of natural and synthetic antacids in managing acid-related disorders. The research aimed to determine which category provides more effective and sustained acid neutralization while understanding consumer preferences and usage patterns. A mixed-methods design was used, combining laboratory experiments and a structured online questionnaire. In the experiment, 0.1 M hydrochloric acid served as the test medium to evaluate the pH-neutralizing capacities of natural antacids (ginger extract and sodium bicarbonate) and synthetic antacids (magnesium trisilicate and aluminium hydroxide). Data from 50 Sokoto residents were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one- way ANOVA. All antacids neutralized gastric acid effectively but varied in duration and stability. Magnesium trisilicate showed the highest and most consistent buffering capacity (pH ≈ 6.4–6.56). ANOVA results confirmed a significant difference in mean pH values (F(3,24) = 3.17, p < 0.05). Survey data revealed that 70% preferred synthetic antacids for quick relief, while 30% favored natural ones for safety. Synthetic antacids demonstrated superior and longer-lasting neutralization compared to natural alternatives. However, the increasing preference for natural remedies highlights the need for further research and public awareness on their safety and effectiveness.
