Abstract

This study investigates the impact of guidance and counselling services on the academic performance of secondary school students in Sokoto Metropolis, Nigeria. Against a backdrop of persistent academic underachievement, the research examines the effectiveness of these services and the extent to which they influence students' learning outcomes. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, data were collected via questionnaires from 200 students across selected public secondary schools. Findings indicate that a majority of students perceive guidance and counselling as beneficial, reporting improvements in stress management, study habits, motivation, and examination performance. However, the study also identifies significant challenges, including a shortage of qualified counsellors, inadequate institutional support, and inconsistent implementation of services. The study concludes that while guidance and counselling have a positive influence on academic performance, their full potential is hindered by systemic weaknesses. Recommendations include the employment of more qualified counsellors, the integration of counselling into the school curriculum, and increased awareness campaigns to enhance student participation and institutional support.
